The Giga Information Group will have a deep bench of talent at the Chicago BrainStorm Conference in March, according to Ken Vollmer. Several Giga analysts will have track chair responsibility. Ken sees the partnership with BrainStorm as a valuable offering for both Giga clients and the IT public at large. In his Executive Day presentation (March 25) of the conference, Ken will cover the three major integration alternatives that organizations have, the unique value of each and which ones are applicable for various business scenarios. The three categories are:
Data integration alternatives have been available for the longest period of time. "Many people think this area has become outdated, but this isn't true," Ken said. The process integration alternatives are newer, having been around for two or three years. They are still expanding and being adopted by more and more organizations. The third group, the services area, contains the most recent integration offerings. This area includes Web Services, which is getting a lot of play right now. Ken said there is a tremendous amount of hype in this area. He wants to present a realistic appraisal of what Web Services can and cannot do along with a methodology that can be used to compare and contrast the current alternatives in the marketplace. Ken will also chair the BPM Strategy Track. His Track Keynote will discuss process management being a key component of e-business strategy. He will be speaking about how the whole area of business process management (BPM) has evolved over the years and how organizations can use it to streamline their internal operations. BPM is now a powerful technology that can be used to enhance the value of business interactions across the entire extended value chain. He will analyze the various components of BPM, provide explanations of how it actually works and spend some time discussing the problems that have come up during implementation of these systems and recommendations to overcome the problems. Ken said the main problems fall into two categories. The first category of problems that manifest are business or management related issues, and the second are technology related issues. Ken said that most people suspect the biggest problems to overcome are technical, but this isn't the case. The biggest problems are always management issues related to project management and business planning. Management still has big problems setting realistic goals and timelines on these projects. He will give several examples of this, along with several case studies. I asked Ken what he saw happening in the IT industry during these lean economic times. He told me that Giga thinks there will be a slow rise of spending in general through 2002, but that two areas, integration and security, which are the highest level of concern at this time, will get the largest share of the money. This is based on interviews with CIOs around the world. As a result, the increase will not be spread generally across all areas. You just can't do B2B integration, Ken told me, without a very serious look at the security issues involved. Ken assured me that Giga's main commitment is to provide realistic recommendations based on the number of years their analysts have spent working on real-world solutions. Giga has always been willing to present new technologies and methodologies honestly along with an accurate appraisal of what their actual ROI should be. Ken mentioned the additional Giga presenters in Chicago include a Keynote by Stephanie Moore, a Vice President of Giga on Day 3 - March 27. Stephanie's Keynote on Evaluating, Engaging and Managing Integration Consultants will cover some of the issues and solutions associated with getting the appropriate integration resources, including application servers, web services, portal software, Enterprise Application Integration (EAI) tools, content management tools, commerce servers and web-to-host products. Stephanie will also Chair the Nearshore and Offshore Outsourcing Seminar which we will cover extensively in the next issue. Phil Murphy, Director at Giga and eAI/Legacy Integration Track Chair will present Maximizing Investments In Legacy IT Investments. Phil will be talking about how the current economic decline has made ROI the paramount issue in deciding which IT projects get funded, which virtually insures that any large projects with very long payback periods will not survive the budget process. This means that management will favor evolving the current technology. Uttam Narsu is a Research Director at Giga and will be covering the Current State of Web Services including Java, Object-oriented development and lightweight methodologies. The agenda for Chicago is unparalleled and attendance is critical for the success of your current integration initiatives!
================================================== BrainStormU.com: The eLearning Center for Forward Thinking Executives ================================================= I interviewed William M. Ulrich on the upcoming Chicago conference in March. He told me what Brainstorm has planned. After a welcome from Gregg Rock, President and Founder of BrainStorm Group, William will be introducing the conference as well as chair an experts panel later that day. On Tuesday he will be giving a Keynote Address on Collaborative Integration Architectures. The Opening Keynote address on Monday (March 25) will be given by Jeff Cripps of Covisint, the large automotive B2B exchange founded by GM, Ford, DaimlerChrysler, Renault and Nissan. Jeff will be talking about B2B integration strategies and what Covisint is doing with the auto industry. Also Phil Wilkerson, Director of Information Systems at Home Depot will present on building collaborative relationships for the twenty-first century retailer. Phil's talk will be centered around relationship building with the focus on how integration is an essential component for maintaining a competitive advantage. He will also outline the basic fundamentals of integration strategies. After the BPM and eAI/Legacy Tracks, the last session of the afternoon will feature an Experts Panel. Participants will discuss the practical implementation aspects of e-business integration as well as on long-term opportunities and strategies at the enterprise and industry level. The panel will be open for audience participation. On Tuesday morning (March 26) William will give the Opening Keynote for the day with a presentation on Collaborative Integration Architectures, covering a general framework for organizations involved in any aspect of integration. William pointed out that, "Integration, by definition, cuts across divisional and functional boundaries as well as the bounds of the enterprise, which extends into third party domains." William will focus on ways to establish those relationships in a way that enhances communication and collaboration. He will also look at the underlying technologies that facilitate integration. These technologies include middleware and other enabling technologies that support the sharing of information and work products across organizational boundaries. He suggested that "to successfully deploy collaborative integration solutions, corporate architecture teams must coordinate integration from a strategic perspective. This requires working with business analysts, designers, developers and integration teams." He added that "integration architectures connect individuals from business units, third parties and development environments working towards common goals." William also emphasized the need for an enabling framework that companies can use to facilitate the shift from piecemeal integration towards cross-functional, integration architectures. Without this level of collaboration, integration efforts will only be able to address the most superficial aspects of their underlying goals. William also emphasized that the conference as a whole looks beyond simple connectivity issues to the root causes and solutions to critical business integration challenges. We'll cover additional topics in upcoming issues - but the full agenda, session descriptions, and speaker information may be viewed in the recently released full conference brochure.
